Give police a break
Reader Input
Do police officers get to take a break? Well of course they do but how would we citizens know when a police officer is in a café if he or she, is on a break or not? The fact is we don’t, but that doesn’t stop some of us from assuming that because we see a police officer (or any municipal employee) sitting down, that they must be loafing off and then, being good citizens, they call city hall and demand that someone put a stop to this abuse of our tax dollars! I wonder how many municipal employees that work in the field are avoiding their favorite establishments, or hiding completely to avoid being the target of a well-meaning citizen’s complaint. Police officers often get their lunch interrupted (if they get lunch at all) by an emergency call that they don’t even think about not responding to, and we appreciate that, so when we see police officers, take a moment to give them what our firemen take for granted – a smile – and congratulate them for finding a job in a community like Rocklin that appreciates them. Let’s give our friends in the RPD a break! Douglas G. Edwards Sr., Rocklin

I found it interesting when a Roseville Police Officer told me that people rarely smile at him. He said that when people see a police officer they get a worried look on their face. Ever since then when I meet and greet a police officer I give him (or her) a big smile.
