Whitney tops Rocklin in softball
Whitney High’s varsity softball team beat the visiting Thunder 5-2 in the battle of Rocklin on Friday in the season opener for both teams. Whitney led 2-0 after one inning, 3-0 after two and 4-0 after four innings in the win. Rocklin scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Samantha Hopping went 2-4 with a RBI for Whitney while teammates Tonya Crockett, Cassandra Weiss, Alyssa Schmidt and Rachel Hopping each had a single and RBI. Angeline Cruz scored twice for the Wildcats. Cara Delgado (2-3), Rebecca Eatough (1-3, RBI) and Stacy McTaggart (1-3, run) led the Thunder offense. Rachel Hopping (four innings, one hit, no runs, three strikeouts) and Cruz (three innings, three hits, one walk, one earned run, five strikeouts) were the pitchers for Whitney. Sierra Ueltzen pitched all seven innings for Rocklin, allowing five hits and five walks while striking out seven. Rocklin (0-2) lost 3-2 to visiting Davis on Tuesday as Jamie Nakagawa, Lauren Orozco, Ueltzen and McTaggart each had two hits for Rocklin. McTaggart hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. Davis scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. Ueltzen pitched the whole game for Rocklin, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out seven.
