The Placer Foothills Woman’s Club and the Superintendent of the Auburn State Recreation Area are working together to promote the Life Vest Loan Program. The club is placing two 4x8 foot signs along the American River with life vests attached to them and information about borrowing the vests and returning them to the sign. The signs with vests will be placed at Upper Lake Clementine and the Confluence of the American River, a popular swimming site in Placer County.
There are several drownings yearly at these locations and the goal of the club is that by providing life vests at the sites, drownings can be prevented.
Club volunteers will help check on the signs regularly to see when replacements of vests are needed.
Local businesses that have helped the club with the project are Diamond Lumber of Auburn, Kurt Fitzhugh Construction of Meadow Vista, Timber Line Signs, and West Marine of Rocklin who gave the group a great discount on the vests.
The 11-member club meets the third Tuesday of the month at Mary Belle’s Restaurant in Old Auburn at 11:30 a.m. If you would like to donate money to help supply the needed replacement vests and to expand the project, contact the club president, Lois Fitzhugh at 530-367-4366.
