13-year-old Taylor Clark of Rocklin was called "Sacramento's fastest texter" through a local radio station's phone text contest. Her seventh week was her last, but she holds the longest run.

Driving to Yogurt Delite one night a couple months ago, something on the radio caught Taylor Clark’s attention.

“So you think you’re the fastest texter?” she remembers Joe Breezy, 107.9 The End deejay say.

Clark immediately thought she was, or was at least a tough competitor. And for six consecutive weeks, Clark of Rocklin held the nickname of “Sacramento’s fastest texter.” Her seventh week was her last, but for a 13-year-old, her stint was a pretty exciting accomplishment.

Every week, between 9 and 10 p.m. on either Tuesday or Wednesday, Breezy calls out to listeners to compete for the title, until Dec. 3.

“All day long I’ll be texting,” Clark said, of how she prepared for the contest.

She admitted she always got nervous competing, but the first try was the hardest.

“It was scary the first week, I really wanted to win,” she said.

Each week, the previous week’s winner and two competitors are given a phrase to type into their cell phones and send. The fastest contestant without spelling errors is named the winner that week and goes on to the next.

Throughout her time as the texting champion, Clark said many of her friends and classmates at Granite Oaks Middle School called in to compete, but none made it through.

The radio station 107.9 is constantly holding contests and competitions for listeners. Breezy said this competition began as he noted a trend in texting.

“I just noticed nowadays, our generation, we text a lot more than we talk,” he said.

The first week, Breezy said the phone lines went crazy and continue to light up with between 800 and 1,000 contenders each week, competing for the grand prize: a pair of backstage tickets to the Jingle Ball 2008 on Dec. 3, featuring top artists performing at Arco Arena.

The winner each week also receives prizes such as haunted house tickets and gift certificates from local sponsors, Breezy said.

For Clark, though, it’s more about the texting. She admits she’s no stranger to people noticing her quick texting skills. Clark said she’s had people stop her at the mall, noticing her texting, and advise her to become a court reporter.

Clark has the keys on her Blackberry Curve phone memorized and is able to text without looking down.

Her mother, Christina Clark, said Taylor’s talent has carried over to the computer keyboard too.

“She’s so fast. She has these mad texting skills,” Christina said with a laugh.
